About the Industry
Producing everything from titanium implants to cutting-edge drug research, Central Oregon’s bioscience and medical device industry has been experiencing year-over-year double digit growth for nearly a decade. Companies such as Lonza, Thermo Fisher Scientific and Grace Bio-Labs are globally recognized for groundbreaking work in their respective fields. The industry employs nearly 1,200 people throughout the region, with 70% of this employment within scientific research and development activities.
In response to industry demand, Oregon State University-Cascades has launched a new Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry and molecular biology to develop a pipeline of graduates for careers in the industry.
The bioscience industry plays a crucial role in Oregon’s global trade, with the state’s life science and medical exports increasing 175% between 2009 and 2019.
Lonza, a Swiss-based pharmaceutical research and manufacturing company, is the largest bioscience employer in the region and among the largest in Oregon, with two campuses and additional operations scattered across Central Oregon.
